This insightful information was posted on our hair restoration forum by Dr. Alan Feller of Great Neck, NY who is a member of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians.
Fortunately most hair transplant hair does in fact stay for “life”. However, there is a small percentage of the population that continues to lose hair in the donor area as they progress in age. It then stands to reason that such people will lose the hair when it’s transplanted. Fortunately this is not common.
Another rare variant are patients who’ve had a successful hair restoration procedure and enjoyed a couple of years of thick hair growth. Then seemingly out of nowhere the transplanted hair begins to thin. This has happened with at least 2 of my patientsin the past that I know of. In this case the best hair loss treatment is to implant more hair to make up for the volume difference.
One of my patients who posts on this hair loss forum was an excellent example of this phenomenon. We did 2 hair transplants on him that looked excellent for almost 3 years. Then, the transplanted hair miniaturized or thinned out. The way we treated it was by packing in more hair between the existing transplanted hairs. That did the trick and his final result was excellent. I’ll dig up the links to his hair transplant photos and post them on the hair loss forum.

Waiting for the new transplanted hair to grow is the hardest part of the hair transplant process. Many patients will find themselves waiting for new signs of growth up to 5 and sometimes even 6 months. But what if there was a way to jump start early hair growth? Minoxidil (found in Rogaine), an FDA approved non-surgical hair regrowth solution has been conjectured to help accelerate transplanted hair growth. But is there is any proof of this? Why do some hair loss doctors believe this while others do not?
View this hair loss forum thread to see what other patient members and physicians are saying about whether or not minoxidil can help jump start early growth. You are encouraged to share your own experience or opinions on this topic.
